Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies

Who is the course for?

This qualification is for learners who have already acquired some counselling skills and now wish to continue their training.  While not yet fully qualified as counsellors, students will be able to undertake workplace experience as trainees.  Applicants should have already completed a Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills course (or an equivalent course of student of at least 75 guided learning hours) and be looking to take the next step in training to become a counsellor and learn more about counselling theory and agency work.

What is the course format?

The 90-hour course is normally run over 12 sessions within an academic year.  The course is part-time to allow students to continue existing work and voluntary commitments.  

Is the course accredited? 

The course is accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) and carries 20 units on the Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF).  It is recognised by the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC

What does the course cover?

The course content includes learning about the counselling environment and different models of counselling; empathy, motivation and mental health; depression, trauma rejection, bereavement and conflict; sexuality and abuse.

Is there homework?

Students complete two essays, a personal learning journal, two book reviews, a group project and a case study as coursework.  There is an external assessment for CPCAB, watching a DVD and completing a paper under exam conditions.  An estimated 90 hours of home study are required in addition to the course sessions.

What further training is available?

Following completion of the Level 3 Certificate, students would be able to progress onto a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling.  

Could I counsel clients with this qualification?

CPCAB recommends completing both the Level 2 and Level 3 Certificate courses before starting to counsel clients as a trainee counsellor under supervision. Barnabas students start counselling placements at the beginning of our Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Counselling course.
