This is a 60 hour course for qualified counsellors who wish to gain a recognised qualification in Supervision. It is open to counsellors who already hold a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling (or its equivalent) and have at least two years post-diploma counselling experience (suggested 400 counselling hours).
As this course will be presented to experienced professional counsellors it is therefore designed as a ‘guided discovery' rather than using a predominantly didactic method. Inevitably there is an overlap between the subjects covered in previous courses. However, the depth of treatment at this stage will be more profound and revealing. The course will typically be run over eight days with a gap between each two days to allow for completion of written assignments.
The course aims are:
To further develop participant's understanding of the concept of supervision within the context of counselling.
To provide an understanding of the theory, practice and philosophy of a core, theoretical, model of Supervision.
To promote additional models and skill to:
enable practising counsellors to feel safe and appreciate the distinctive roles of Supervisor/Supervisee.
help and support Supervisee in respect of legal aspects and in planning and implementing courses of action.
Facilitate the future development of counsellors they are supervising.
The course includes a mixture of input from the trainer and participative training involving working in groups, pairs and as individuals. There will also be required reading and written assignments including Learning Journal, Self-Review, Tutor observed skills assessment, four essays, case presentation, Supervisee Record, Peer Feedback, Tutorial records, external assessment via structured case review.
Students will also be required to complete 12 hours of Supervision practice within three months of starting this course.
